Who we are
We started to help our boys move past the screens that engulf everyday life. We wanted them to do more than stare at a tablet feeding an addiction so many have succumbed to. We wanted them to understand where food comes from. Too understand what hard work is. We started with honey bees and then progressed into the homesteaders’ gateway animal of chickens. Then mom discovered that gardening helped her decompress from the daily struggles of being a teacher. Dad discovered he needed a break from his computer job and wanted more. We started in our backyard, on 1 acre as Sainz Family Farm. Now we have moved on to 20 acres following in the footsteps of the homesteading pioneers of Youtube. We did not grow up with this life. We are learning as we go and hoping for the best.
Many that knew us when we started asked why the rebrand? Why change? The truth is we always struggled with the name. The Sainz Family is much more than just our small home. When we bought the 20 acres, we went out when the sun was setting to show the boys what no light pollution looked like at night. What I, Dad, remember from my youth. The stars were fantastic. We saw a shooting star that night but more remarkable. Mom and the boys saw blue fireflies. Dad didn’t believe it and to this day has not seen them. However, a little online searching revealed that yes, they exist. Primarily in North Carolina, but apparently some can and do live in South Texas. Whether Dad or not saw them, the name for our new homestead would be memorialized that night, Blue Ghost Acres named after the Blue Ghost Fireflies.
