From Screens to Soil: The Real Story of Blue Ghost Acres
This farm didn’t start with a grand business plan or generations of agricultural knowledge. It started with a problem we see everywhere, every day: our boys, glued to the screens that engulf modern life.
We wanted to give them something more than a tablet to stare at, something more than a digital world feeding an addiction so many have succumbed to. We wanted them to understand where their food comes from. To feel the satisfaction of real, tangible work in their own hands.
That desire was the single seed that would eventually grow into Blue Ghost Acres.
The Backyard Experiment: Sainz Family Farm
Our journey began small, in our backyard on a single acre we called Sainz Family Farm. We didn’t know exactly what we were doing, so we started with something fascinating: honeybees. We were instantly captivated by their complex world and the sweet reward of their work.
From there, we moved on to the homesteader’s gateway animal: chickens. The simple joy of collecting our own fresh eggs each morning was a revelation. The backyard was becoming something more than just a lawn; it was becoming a place of purpose.
An Unexpected Discovery for Mom and Dad
As the farm grew, so did we. The project we started for our sons began to change us, too.
For Mom, a teacher navigating the daily struggles of her profession, the garden became a sanctuary. It was a place to decompress, to put her hands in the soil and quietly nurture new life. It was therapy.
For Dad, whose job keeps him tied to a computer, the farm became a much-needed escape. It was a chance to build something real, to solve physical problems, and to get tired in a different, more satisfying way. He wanted more.
Learning as We Go
We weren’t born into this life. We don’t have a long history of farming knowledge to draw on. Our teachers have been the homesteading pioneers of YouTube, the bloggers who share their honest struggles, and the online communities that offer advice. We are learning as we go, celebrating every small success, and trying to laugh at the (many) failures. We are proof that anyone with a desire to learn can start this journey.
From a Backyard to a Bigger Dream
The one-acre Sainz Family Farm taught us what was possible, but it also showed us its limits. We knew if we wanted to take this new passion seriously, we needed more space—space to grow not just more food, but to grow as a family.
That’s when we made the leap, moving on to the 20 acres that is now Blue Ghost Acres. It’s the next chapter in our story.
So, what is Blue Ghost Acres all about? It’s still about our boys. It’s about choosing connection over consumption, reality over virtual reality, and the reward of hard work over passive entertainment. It’s our small piece of the world where we are building a life, together.
We are still learning as we go and hoping for the best. And we're so glad to have you along for the journey.
